Sánchez achieved the premiership through a significant political mechanism. In June 2018, the PSOE initiated a vote of no confidence. This is a formal process to remove a leader from office. The motion succeeded with support from Unidas Podemos and various regionalist parties. Consequently, King Felipe VI appointed Sánchez as Prime Minister the next day. 
Today, Sánchez manages complex relationships with many global leaders. He meets with heads of state to discuss international issues. For example, he has met with Joe Biden of the United States.
