António Manuel de Oliveira Guterres is a prominent Portuguese diplomat and politician. Since 2017, he has served as the ninth Secretary-General of the United Nations. This position is the top leadership role within the United Nations, an international organization. 
Guterres began his journey with a strong focus on science and education. He was born on April 30, 1949, in Cascais, Portugal. As a student at the Camões Lyceum, he won the National Lyceums Award. This award recognized him as the best student in the country in 1965. 
His political career started in 1974 when he joined the Socialist Party. 
Guterres served as the Prime Minister of Portugal from 1995 to 2002. 
During his time in government, Guterres managed significant economic shifts. He oversaw the privatization of 29 different companies between 1996 and 1999. This process helped reduce the public sector's share of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). In 1994, the public sector held 11% of the GDP, but this dropped to 5.5% five years later. He also encouraged many citizens to invest in large companies. For example, 800,000 people invested in Portugal Telecom in 1996. In 1998, he presided over the Expo 98 event in Lisbon. This event celebrated the 500th anniversary of Vasco da Gama's voyage.
In 2005, Guterres transitioned to international humanitarian work. He was elected as the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. This agency, known as the UNHCR, provides protection to people forced to flee their homes. Guterres led a massive organization with more than 10,000 staff members. His team worked in 126 different countries. They provided assistance to over 60 million refugees, returnees, and displaced persons. He focused on reforming the agency to improve its emergency response. He specifically addressed crises in the Middle East, such as the Syrian civil war. He also highlighted needs in the Central African Republic and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
In October 2016, Guterres was elected to succeed Ban Ki-moon as Secretary-General. He officially took office at the start of 2017.
