Juan Manuel Santos is a famous leader from Colombia.

Before becoming president, Santos held many important government jobs. In 1991, he served as the first Minister of Foreign Trade. Later, in 2000, he was the Minister of Finance. In 2006, he became the Minister of National Defence. This was a very difficult time for the country. During his time in this role, a scandal called "false positives" happened. Some members of the military killed innocent civilians. They told the government these people were fighters in a war. Santos admitted these mistakes happened and promised to fix them.
In 2010, Santos won the election to become the President of Colombia.
To find peace, Santos started talking with the FARC in 2012. This was a very brave and hard choice. He wanted to create a new way to settle disputes. He suggested a process based on truth and making things right. In 2016, the government and the FARC signed a revised peace deal. This deal was sent to Congress to be made official. On November 29 and 30, 2016, both houses of Congress approved it. This helped bring an end to the long conflict in Colombia.
Because of his hard work, Santos received a very special honor. In 2016, he was the only person to win the Nobel Peace Prize. This prize is given to people who work for peace. His work showed that even long wars can find an end through talking. Even though the peace deal caused many arguments in his country, it changed history. Santos has been named one of the most influential people in the world by Time magazine. He left office in 2018 after serving his full term.
Juan Manuel Santos Calderón is a prominent Colombian politician and economist. He served as the President of Colombia from 2010 to 2018.
Santos was born in Bogotá, Colombia, on August 10, 1951. He grew up in a family with significant influence in Colombian society. From 1913 to 2007, his family held the majority shares of El Tiempo. This was the major newspaper of record in Colombia.
His academic background is quite diverse and specialized. He attended the University of Kansas, where he earned a degree in Economics and Business Administration in 1973.
Before his presidency, Santos held several high-ranking ministerial positions. In 1991, President César Gaviria Trujillo appointed him as Colombia's first Minister of Foreign Trade. In 2000, President Andrés Pastrana Arango named him the 64th Minister of Finance and Public Credit.
However, his time as Minister of Defence was marked by a serious scandal known as "false positives." This term refers to the extrajudicial execution of civilians by military members. These individuals were killed and then incorrectly reported as guerrillas killed in combat.
Santos won the presidential election in 2010, but his term faced significant political challenges. He faced strong opposition from his former mentor, Álvaro Uribe. This rivalry caused Santos to face low approval ratings during the 2014 election. Despite this, he remained focused on his primary goal: negotiating peace with the FARC guerrilla group. The conflict with the FARC had lasted for 52 years. This war was extremely expensive for the Colombian economy. According to Indepaz, the war cost 152 billion US dollars. In the final five years, the daily cost reached 9.3 million dollars. This was enough money to feed 3 million people in Colombia.
In 2012, Santos began exploratory talks with the FARC to find a peaceful solution. He proposed a process based on truth and reconciliation rather than just punishment. In September 2016, he announced that a complete agreement had been reached. Although a referendum on the deal was narrowly defeated by the "No" campaign, the government moved forward. The revised peace deal was sent to Congress for ratification. Both houses of Congress approved the accord on November 29 and 30, 2016. This ratification marked a historic end to the long-running internal conflict.
