Humans have been mapping these stars for a long time. The constellation first appeared on a celestial globe in 1598. This globe was made in Amsterdam by Petrus Plancius and Jodocus Hondius. It was likely based on observations from explorers Pieter Dirkszoon Keyser and Frederick de Houtman.

Later, in 1603, Johann Bayer included Pavo in his famous star atlas. In 1756, the astronomer Nicolas-Louis de Lacaille gave the stars their Greek letter names.
