Scofield was very special because he achieved the "Triple Crown of Acting." This means he won a Tony Award, an Academy Award, and a Primetime Emmy Award. These are three of the highest honors an actor can receive. He was also honored by the Queen of England with a CBE in 1956 and a CH in 2001.

Scofield had a very unique way of working on his roles. He did not use a purely intellectual or mental approach to acting. Instead, he used an intuitive approach to find his characters. He wanted to know if he could truly identify with the person he played.

He believed it was important to like the play first. He also worked hard to understand how a character would feel. Once he understood those feelings, he knew how the character should sound.

His journey started in Edgbaston, Birmingham, in England. He was born on 21 January 1922 to Mary and Edward Harry Scofield. As a young boy, his home life was divided between different religious beliefs.

When he was twelve, he went to Varndean School in Brighton. It was there that he discovered the plays of William Shakespeare. He loved these plays so much that he said he lived just for them. In 1939, he began his professional training at the Croydon Repertory Theatre.

One of his most important roles was playing Sir Thomas More. He first played this part in the 1960 stage play, "A Man for All Seasons." He won a Tony Award for Best Actor for this performance.

Later, he played the same role in a 1966 film. This earned him an Academy Award for Best Actor. He was one of only eleven people to win both awards for the same role. He also appeared in films like "The Train" in 1964 and "King Lear" in 1971.

Scofield's life shows how much work goes into being a great artist. He often preferred to be alone when he was thinking about his work. He found the social side of the theater to be quite draining. He focused all his energy on the acting itself. Even when he was not on stage, he was often thinking about his next role. His dedication helped him become a legend in the world of acting.
