As a young man, Anka studied piano under Winifred Rees. He also sang with the St. Elias Antiochian Orthodox Cathedral choir. Under the direction of Frederick Karam, he studied music theory. During high school, he performed in a vocal trio known as the Bobby Soxers.

His professional journey began with significant early success. At age 14, he recorded his first single, "I Confess." In 1956, Anka traveled to Manhattan with $100 to audition for Don Costa at ABC Records. He sang a verse he had written, which led to the release of "Diana." This song reached number 1 on both the Canadian and U.S. music charts. "Diana" remains one of the best-selling singles ever by a Canadian recording artist. By age 17, Anka was a major teen idol, with hits like "It's Time to Cry," which reached number 4, and "(All of a Sudden) My Heart Sings," which hit number 15.

Beyond his own singing, Anka became a highly successful songwriter for other performers.

He also co-wrote three songs with Michael Jackson, including "This Is It," "Love Never Felt So Good," and "Don't Matter to Me." After legal discussions regarding copyright, Anka was granted 50% of the copyright for "This Is It."

Anka's career experienced several distinct phases and comebacks. After a decade without a top 25 hit, he signed with United Artists in the 1970s. This led to a major breakthrough in 1974 with the number 1 hit "(You're) Having My Baby," recorded with Odia Coates. This success introduced him to a new generation of fans. He also found success with the song "Times of Your Life," a Kodak jingle that became a top 7 hit in 1976. In the 1990s, he released the album *A Body of Work*, which featured artists like Celine Dion.
