Patty Sheehan is a famous American golfer who reached the very top of her sport. She joined the LPGA Tour in 1980, which is a major professional group for women golfers. Throughout her career, she won 35 LPGA Tour events and six major championships. A major championship is one of the most important and difficult contests a golfer can win.

Because of her amazing skills, she was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame. She is also a member of the Collegiate Golf Hall of Fame and the National High School Hall of Fame.

Patty's journey to the professional tour began with many successes as a young athlete. She was born in Middlebury, Vermont, and was once a top junior snow skier. She attended Earl Wooster High School in Reno, Nevada, where she won three straight state championships. She also won two straight California Women's Amateur Championships in 1977 and 1978.

After high school, she went to the University of Nevada and San Jose State University. In 1980, she was the AIAW national individual intercollegiate golf champion.

Her professional career was filled with incredible wins and big moments. In 1981, she won the Mazda Japan Classic and was named the LPGA Rookie of the Year. She was very strong during the 1980s and won four times in both 1983 and 1984.

During those years, she also won the LPGA Championship twice. In 1992, she made history by winning both the U.S. Women's Open and the Women's British Open in the same year. This made her the first golfer ever to achieve that feat.

Even great athletes face hard times and tough losses. In 1989, the Loma Prieta earthquake destroyed her home and her things. In 1990, she lost a big tournament after holding an 11-shot lead.

However, she stayed strong and won five tournaments in 1990 alone. She continued to win major titles like the Nabisco Dinah Shore in 1996. She also represented the United States on the Solheim Cup team five times. She even served as the team captain in 2002 and 2003.

Today, Patty Sheehan is known for her kindness and her leadership. She hosts a tournament called Patty Sheehan & Friends on the Legends Tour. This event helps many charities for women and children in Northern Nevada.

She was also one of the first LPGA players to speak publicly about being a lesbian. In 2020, Queerty named her a hero for helping the nation move toward equality and dignity. She shows that you can be a champion on the course and a hero in your community.
