Aylwin spent many years working in politics and helping his country.

Aylwin worked hard to bring democracy back to Chile. For many years, the country was under a military dictatorship. This was led by Augusto Pinochet. In 1988, Chile held a big national vote called a plebiscite. People voted on whether Pinochet should stay in power. The "No" side won the vote.

He became the 30th president of Chile in 1990. He served in this role until 1994. Even though he was president, the military was still very powerful. The laws made it hard for him to change everything at once. However, he still worked to change how power worked in Chile. He helped start direct elections for local towns in 1992.
