Paris Club

To help, a group of countries meets to talk. They are called the Paris Club. This group started in 1956. It began when Argentina met with its lenders. Today, there are 22 permanent members in the club. These members are mostly wealthy nations that lend money.

The group follows a few main rules. First, they work as a team. This is called solidarity. Second, they must all agree on a plan. They call this consensus. They also look at each country one by one. This helps them make a plan that fits.

The group meets about ten times each year. A small team in France helps them plan. This team is called the Secretariat. They help the members reach an agreement. When a country needs help, they must show a plan to fix their money problems. This plan is often made with the help of the IMF. So far, the club has helped 102 countries. They have helped change about 600 billion dollars in debt.
