The Paris Agreement is a major international treaty about climate change.

It focuses on three main areas: mitigation, adaptation, and finance. Mitigation means working to stop climate change from getting worse. Adaptation means learning to live with the changes that are already happening. Finance involves moving money to help countries meet these goals. This agreement is very important because it helps countries work together. It aims to create a stronger response to the dangers of a warming world.

To reach its goals, the treaty uses a special way of working. Instead of leaders telling every country exactly what to do, countries make their own plans. These are called Nationally Determined Contributions, or NDCs. Each country must plan and regularly report on its own work. The agreement asks that each new plan should be even better than the last one. This creates a system where countries try to increase their ambition over time.

Many years of work led to this moment in Paris. In 1992, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change was adopted. Later, in 1997, the Kyoto Protocol set rules for some countries. However, the Kyoto Protocol had some problems with how it worked. In 2015, leaders met near Paris for a big conference.

After two weeks of intense talks, they reached a consensus. The agreement was finally opened for signatures on April 22, 2016.

The treaty has very specific temperature goals. Leaders want to keep the rise in global temperature well below 2 degrees Celsius. They would prefer to limit the increase to only 1.5 degrees Celsius.

To stay below that 1.5 degree limit, emissions must be cut by about 50% by the year 2030. The goal is to reach net zero emissions by the middle of the 21st century. As of January 2026, 194 members of the UNFCCC are part of the agreement. The United States has moved in and out of the agreement several times. It withdrew in 2020, rejoined in 2021, and withdrew again in 2026.

Understanding this agreement helps us see how the world tries to solve big problems. It is different from older rules like the Kyoto Protocol. The Paris Agreement includes both developed and developing countries in its plans.

While it is a helpful tool, it faces many challenges. Some people worry the rules are not strict enough to work. Even so, the agreement has been used in courts to help protect the planet. It remains a central part of how nations talk about our future.
