Paper craft is a broad category of artistic creation. It uses paper or card stock as the primary medium. Artists use these materials to build two-dimensional or three-dimensional objects.

The versatility of paper allows for many different physical transformations. Creators can fold, curve, or bend the material into new shapes. They can also cut, glue, or layer sheets to add depth. Some advanced techniques even involve molding or stitching the paper. Even the process of making paper by hand is considered a paper craft.

There are many specific ways to manipulate these materials. One method is creating a 3D paper model. This process starts with a 3D mesh of polygons. These polygons are unfolded into a flat, printable pattern. The pattern includes specific markings for the artist to follow. These include cutting lines and glue tabs for assembly. It also includes mountain fold lines and valley fold lines. By following these precise instructions, a flat sheet becomes a complex structure.

Paper folding is a major branch of this art form. The term "paper" actually comes from papyrus. This was an ancient Egyptian material made from beaten reeds. As far back as the third millennium B.C., people were using it. The earliest known example of paper folding is an Egyptian map. This map was folded into rectangular shapes, much like a modern road map. However, very intricate folding art became possible later. This happened after the introduction of wood-pulp based papers.

Different cultures have developed their own unique folding traditions. In Japan, the art is known as origami. The first Japanese origami dates back to the 6th century A.D. While many in the West use the word "origami" for all paper folding, it specifically refers to the Japanese tradition. Other cultures have their own names and styles. China practices zhezhi, which is Chinese paper folding. Korea has a tradition called jong'i jeopgi. In the West, people often fold simple items like paper boats or planes.

Paper cutting is another distinct and skillful tradition. In Mexico and parts of Latin America, people practice papel picado. This technique uses chisels to cut through many layers at once. Artists can cut between 50 to 100 sheets in a single session. This is very different from Chinese paper cutting. In China, artists use knives or scissors on up to 8 sheets. European forms, such as wycinanki, are usually done on one single sheet. In most of these traditions, the paper is folded first. This allows the artist to create perfectly symmetrical designs.

Paper can also be used to create textured or painted works. Paper pulp painting is a style that began in the 20th century. This method involves building images using colored paper pulp. Contemporary artists like Chuck Close and Lynn Sures use this medium. Beyond fine art, paper pulp has practical uses in different parts of the world. In rural India, people widely use paper pulp craft to make utility baskets for kitchens.

Because paper is an accessible medium, it serves many purposes. It is relatively inexpensive and easy to find. It is also easier to manage than heavy materials like wood, metal, or ceramics. Paper is often neater to use than liquid media like paints or dyes. This makes it useful in education for teaching children. It can also be used in therapeutic settings. It provides a safe and uncomplicated way for children to express their feelings.

The variety of paper crafts is immense. Some people enjoy scrapbooking, cardmaking, or making paper flowers. Other popular styles include decoupage, papier-mâché, and quilling. One can also study book binding, paper layering, or paper marbling. There are even specialized versions like 3D origami or origata. Whether for decoration or utility, paper remains a vital tool for human creativity.
