It first grew in southern Mexico and Central America. Today, many countries grow it. India makes the most papaya in the world.

The plant has a single tall stem. Big leaves grow at the very top. These leaves have seven parts called lobes. The fruit is a large berry. It has many black seeds inside. The fruit is ripe when it feels soft. The skin turns orange or amber when ready.

Papayas have different types of flowers. Some plants have only male flowers. These flowers make pollen but no fruit. Other plants have female flowers. Some plants are hermaphrodites. This means they have both male and female parts. They can make fruit on their own.

Many animals like this fruit.

Birds often eat the papaya. Some tiny bugs can hurt the plants. Viruses can also make the leaves turn yellow. In Hawaii, scientists changed the plant's DNA. This helped the plants fight a bad virus. This made the papaya stronger.
