He was known as the "King of Rumba Rock." He played many styles of music. These included rumba, soukous, and ndombolo. He used a lokole to make rhythm. A lokole is a hollow tree trunk played with sticks.

Wemba led several musical groups. He started with a band called Zaiko Langa Langa. Later, he formed his own group called Viva la Musica. He wanted to help young and unknown artists. He even used his home to create a place for musicians to meet. He called this place Village Molokai.

He was also a leader in fashion. He helped make a style called La Sape popular. This style is about being well-dressed and clean. It was inspired by big fashion cities like Paris. Wemba traveled to Paris to share his music with the world. His songs mixed African sounds with rock and pop. This helped his music reach many different people. He remains a great star for many musicians today.
