It sits near the River Arno. A banker named Luca Pitti started the building in 1458. He wanted a grand home. Later, the Medici family bought the palace in 1549.

They made it much larger. They added a long walkway called the Vasari Corridor. This let the family move safely through the city. The Medici also made the Boboli Gardens.

These gardens have a large park and an amphitheater. The palace was also home to kings of Italy. In 1919, King Victor Emmanuel III gave it to the people. Now, it is a very large museum. It has 140 rooms for visitors to see. The Palatine Gallery is a main part of the museum. It holds over 500 old paintings. These include works by artists like Raphael and Titian. The art is hung just like it was in a private home. Some rooms have beautiful art painted on the walls. These are called frescoes. The palace is a very important part of Florence.
