She is widely recognized as a pioneer who transformed the sport of golf. Her success helped open doors for many international players. She was born in Taejon on September 28, 1977. Pak grew up in Taejon and Kongju City. She was the top amateur golfer at her school in Kongju. Later, she moved to Seoul to undergo intensive training. She turned professional in 1996 before moving to the United States.

Pak's career on the LPGA Tour began in earnest in 1998. This was her rookie season, meaning her first full year as a professional. She achieved immediate and massive success during this period. Pak won two major championships in her first year. These were the McDonald's LPGA Championship and the U.S. Women's Open. At just 20 years old, she became the youngest winner in the history of the U.S. Women's Open.

That specific tournament was an endurance test. It lasted 92 holes and required a 20-hole playoff to decide the winner.

Throughout her career, Pak demonstrated incredible consistency and skill. She won a total of 25 events on the LPGA Tour. In addition to those, she secured five major championships. Her dominance was visible in specific tournaments. For example, she won the Jamie Farr Owens Corning Classic five times. This feat made her only the fourth player in LPGA history to win the same event five or more times. In 2006, she also won the McDonald's LPGA Championship for the third time. These victories showed her ability to perform under immense pressure.

Pak also broke barriers by competing against men. In 2003, she played in the SBS Super Tournament on the Korean Tour. This was a professional men's event. She finished in 10th place. This achievement was historic for women in golf. She became the first woman to make the cut in a professional men's tournament since Babe Zaharias did so in 1945. This moment proved that her skills were effective across different levels of professional play.

Even great athletes face difficult challenges and setbacks. During her career, Pak struggled to find a balance between her golf and her personal life. She noted that she felt unhappy and pressured by her own high expectations. She also dealt with a physical finger injury. In 2005, she missed the cut at the McDonald's LPGA Championship. This was the first time she had missed a cut in 29 major appearances. However, she showed great resilience. She rediscovered her best form in 2006 to win another major title.

Pak's impact on the sport is best seen through her influence on South Korean golf. In 1998, she was the only South Korean player on the LPGA Tour. By 2008, there were 45 South Korean players competing on the tour. Her success made South Korean television rights a major source of revenue for the LPGA. She inspired a new generation of stars, including Na Yeon Choi and Inbee Park.

A statue of Pak stands in Gongju to honor her. It depicts her famous shot from a water hazard during the 1998 U.S. Women's Open.

Her legacy is officially recognized by the highest authorities in golf. In June 2007, Pak was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame. At age 29, she became the youngest living person ever to be inducted. This surpassed the record held by Karrie Webb. Some experts believe her influence changed the face of golf even more than Tiger Woods. She remains a symbol of excellence and global growth for the sport. Pak officially retired from professional golf following the 2016 season.
