Pak Kyongni was a highly influential South Korean novelist. She is best known for her profound exploration of human dignity. This concept refers to the inherent self-respect and worth of a person. Her writing often examined how individuals maintain this dignity during times of great struggle. Many literary writers remember her as a vital guide for their own lives and creative works. Her legacy continues to shape the landscape of Korean literature today.

Pak's professional writing career began in 1955. This followed a recommendation from the poet and novelist Kim Tong-ni. Her literary debut was a novel titled Gyesan, or Calculations. Early in her career, her stories were closely tied to her own life experiences. For example, her works like Boolsin Sidae (Time of Distrust) and Amheuk Sidae (Time of Darkness) featured female narrators. These characters often lived with their mothers after losing husbands or sons. This reflected the personal hardships Pak faced as a widow and a provider.

As her career progressed, her writing style and subject matter evolved. In her later work, such as Kimyakgukui Ddaldeul (The Daughters of Pharmacist Kim), she focused on characters who overcame significant difficulties. Her perspective eventually became more objective. She moved from writing about the specific era of the Korean War to describing everyday life. This shift allowed her to employ a wider variety of literary styles and topics. She used her craft to transform personal adversity into universal stories about resilience.

Her most significant achievement is the epic saga Toji, which translates to The Land. She began writing this massive project in 1969. It was first released as a serial publication in the magazine Hyundae Munhak. The writing process for this single work spanned 25 years. Toji consists of 20 volumes in total. It is considered one of the greatest contributions to the history of Korean literature. The work has been translated into several languages, including English, German, French, and Japanese.

Toji serves as a historical record of the Korean peninsula. The story is set during the turbulent transition of the 19th and 20th centuries. It follows hundreds of characters through the period of Japanese imperial rule. The narrative also covers the eventual division of the peninsula. The main protagonists, Kim Gilsang and Choi Seohee, struggle to preserve their dignity during these shifts. The novel uses native folk language to create a vivid sense of place. It depicts the history of a nation through the lens of a vast "Mother Earth."

Pak Kyongni's impact on the literary world is measured by both honors and institutions. In 2011, the Park Kyong-ni Prize was established in her honor. It is recognized as one of the richest literary prizes in the world. In 1999, she opened the Toji Cultural Center in Wonju, Gangwon Province. This center sits on the site of her original home and helps nurture new writers. She also served as the chairperson of the board of trustees for the Toji Cultural Foundation, which was created in 1996.

Even after her death from lung cancer in 2008, her influence remains global. In 2018, the first monument dedicated to her outside of South Korea was erected in Saint Petersburg. She received several prestigious honors during her life, including the Bogwan Order of Cultural Merit in 1992. She was also posthumously awarded the Gold Crown medal by the South Korean Culture Ministry. These honors recognize her role in promoting South Korean arts to the rest of the world.
