Kim Ku was a central figure in the struggle for Korean independence and national unity.

Born Kim Ch'angam on August 29, 1876, in T'otkol, Haeju, he came from a poor farming family. His family lacked wealth and social status in the Joseon era. His father belonged to the Andong Kim clan, but the family had lost its noble standing in 1651. At age two, Kim survived smallpox, which left permanent scars on his face. Despite these hardships, his parents prioritized his education to help him escape poverty.

His early life was marked by significant social and political upheaval. At age nine, he began preparing for the civil service examinations. These were difficult tests used to select government officials. However, schools rejected him because of his lower social class. He eventually found a tutor at age twelve. In 1888, his father suffered a stroke that left him paralyzed. To pay for medical care, Kim's mother sold all their belongings. During this time, Kim supported himself by cutting and carrying wood.

Kim's political journey began with the Donghak Peasant Revolution in 1894. This movement sought to fix social instability and limit foreign influence in Korea. It aimed to introduce democracy and establish human rights. At age 17, Kim became a district leader in the movement. He commanded a Donghak army regiment of approximately 700 people. After his unit was defeated by government and Japanese forces, he escaped to the mountains. He later changed his name to Kim Ch'angsu, following a common East Asian tradition after major life events.

In 1896, Kim was involved in a violent encounter that changed his life. While staying at an inn in Ch'ihap'o, he killed a man he believed was a Japanese official. Kim claimed he did this to avenge the death of the Korean Queen. Most historians now believe the man was actually Tsuchida Josuke, a Japanese merchant. This event led to Kim's arrest and imprisonment. In jail, he was treated harshly by Japanese authorities. However, he used his time to read translations of Western history and science books. These books changed his worldview, leading him to believe that new ideas could modernize Korea.

After escaping prison in 1898, Kim became an active leader in the independence movement. He spent many years in exile in the Republic of China. During this period, he helped establish the Korean Provisional Government. He served as its head from 1926 to 1927 and again from 1940 to 1945.

He also founded several influential groups. These included the Korean Independence Party and the Korean Patriotic Organization. He also led the Korean Liberation Army to fight for freedom.

Following the surrender of Japan in 1945, Kim returned to Korea. He became a vocal critic of Syngman Rhee, who was the preferred leader for the United States in South Korea. Kim's primary goal was to prevent the permanent division of the Korean peninsula. In 1948, he fiercely opposed the creation of two separate states. To find a solution, he traveled to Pyongyang to hold talks with Kim Il Sung.

Unfortunately, these discussions failed to reach an agreement, and the division became a reality.

Kim Ku's life ended abruptly on June 26, 1949. He was assassinated by an army officer named Ahn Doo-hee. Although he died before the Korean War began, his influence remained massive. In South Korea, he is revered as one of the nation's greatest historical figures. In North Korea, his legacy is celebrated less because of his anti-communist views. His life illustrates the complex struggle for identity and unity in a changing world.
