Archaeological evidence shows humans inhabited this area very long ago. Early settlements grew into a maritime trading state by the 3rd century. One settlement was called Kiu-Li. It had an important international port. In the 5th century, the Old Pahang Kingdom sent envoys to the Liu Song court. Later, the Pahang Sultanate became an autonomous kingdom in the 15th century. The state was a vassal to the Malacca Sultanate for a time. It later entered a dynastic union with the Johor Sultanate in the 17th century.

Political changes continued through the centuries. After a civil war ended in 1863, the state was restored as a sultanate in 1881. In 1895, Pahang became a British protectorate. This status was shared with Perak, Selangor, and Negeri Sembilan. During World War II, the Empire of Japan occupied Pahang from 1941 to 1945. After the war, Pahang was part of the Malayan Union. Eventually, it was absorbed into the Federation of Malaya. The state gained full independence from the British. Today, the Sultan is the head of state. The Menteri Besar serves as the head of government. The system is modeled on the Westminster parliamentary system.

The economy of modern Pahang is quite diverse. It is an important part of the East Coast Economic Region. The state focuses on services, manufacturing, and agriculture. It serves as a logistics hub for the east coast. The mineral sector attracts much investment. People mine for iron ore, gold, tin, and bauxite.

There are also oil and natural gas fields offshore. These fields are located in the South China Sea. In the past, timber resources were also a major source of wealth. Large areas have been cleared for rubber and oil palm plantations. Many people were resettled into new villages through agencies like FELDA and FELCRA.

There are interesting theories about the name "Pahang." Some scholars look at the Khmer word for tin. The word is phonetically identical to Pahang. This theory is linked to the ancient tin mines at Sungai Lembing. Others suggest the name comes from the Pahang River or a tree species. The name has appeared in many ways in historical records. For example, the Song dynasty author Zhao Rukuo called it Phong-hong. During the Yuan dynasty, it was known as Phenn-Khenn. In the Ming dynasty, it was written as Pen-Heng. Many variations exist in Arabic and European texts. These include names like Pam, Pan, and Paham. These names show how the world has viewed this place for centuries.
