It began as a small settlement long ago. The Mranma people lived there first. Over time, they grew into the Bamar people.

In the 1050s, a king named Anawrahta took charge. He joined many lands together. This made the Pagan Empire very large.

The empire spread across the Irrawaddy valley. It even reached far to the south and east.

During this time, Buddhism grew very strong. The people built many beautiful temples. They built over 10,000 Buddhist temples!

Many of these still stand today.

But the kingdom faced hard times later. Rich people gave much land to religious groups. This meant the kings had less money. In the late 1200s, the kingdom began to fall. Groups like the Mongols invaded the land. By the year 1287, the empire was gone. This led to many years of small, separate groups.
