It is a system used to prepare goods for transport, storage, and sale. Packaging has many important jobs to do for our world. It protects items from bumps, heat, and vibrations. It also acts as a barrier against oxygen, water, and sunlight. This barrier helps keep food fresh and sterile for a long time.

Some packages even use special parts to soak up oxygen to help things stay good.

There are many ways a package works to help us. One way is through containment, which holds liquids or powders in place. It can also group small things together, like a box of 1,000 marbles. This makes them much easier to handle than single items. Packaging also shares information through labels. These labels tell us how to use a product or how to recycle it.

In 1890, Robert Gair invented the pre-cut paperboard box. This happened after an accident while he was printing seed bags. In the 20th century, new materials like aluminum and plastic were added. In 1952, Michigan State University became the first school to teach packaging engineering.

Today, packaging is a huge part of the global economy. In 2019, the food packaging market was worth about 303.26 billion dollars. Much of this is used to make life more convenient for people. Some packages are made for single servings to help with portion control.
