Pétanque is a popular sport belonging to the category of boules sports.

This group includes games like bocce, lawn bowls, and crown green bowling. In pétanque, players or teams compete to position their boules near a small target ball. This target is officially called a jack, or cochonnet. Some people also call it a bouchon or le petit. The objective is to score points by being closer to the jack than your opponent. You can achieve this by rolling or throwing boules toward the target. You can also score by hitting an opponent's boule to knock it away. This game is best played on hard dirt or gravel surfaces.

To begin a game, players must follow a specific sequence of actions. First, a coin toss determines which team starts the match. The winning team places a circle, called a cercle, on the terrain. This circle can be scratched in the dirt or made of red plastic. A player stands inside the circle to throw the jack. The jack must land at a distance between 6 and 10 meters.

After the jack is placed, teams take turns throwing their boules. The team whose boule is closest to the jack is said to "hold the point." This team continues to throw until they no longer hold the point or run out of boules. If a team runs out of boules, the opponent throws all their remaining boules.

Scoring in pétanque happens at the end of each round, known as an end.

An end is complete when all boules have been thrown or the jack goes "dead." A jack is dead if it is knocked out of play. If the jack is live, the winning team receives one point for every boule closer to the jack than the opponent's closest boule.

For example, if Team Red has two boules closer than Team Blue's best boule, Red scores two points. If the closest boules are exactly the same distance from the jack, no points are awarded. The first team to reach 13 points wins the entire game. This structure requires both precision and strategic thinking from every player.

Players use different techniques to control their boules during a match. The traditional method involves holding the boule with the palm facing downward. Players use an under-arm swing that ends with an upward flick of the wrist. This specific motion puts backspin on the boule. Backspin provides the player with maximum control and flexibility.

A player might choose to roll the boule across the ground. They might also use a high lob, called a portée, to toss the boule through the air. These different styles allow players to adapt to the terrain and the position of the jack.

Modern equipment has evolved significantly through various technological changes. Before the mid-1800s, players used solid wooden balls made from boxwood root. Later, manufacturers began covering wooden boules with nails to create boules cloutées. In the mid-1920s, Paul Courtlieu introduced the first all-metal boule, known as la Boule Intégrale. It was cast from a single piece of bronze-aluminum alloy. Soon after, Jean Blanc developed a method to make steel boules. He stamped two steel blanks into hemispheres and welded them together. Today, competition boules are hollow and made of metal. They must have a diameter between 70.5 and 80 millimeters and weigh between 650 and 800 grams.

History shows that pétanque grew from a specific need for accessibility. Boules games have long roots in ancient Greece and Rome. In the 19th century, a popular French game called jeu provençal was common. In that game, players had to run three steps before throwing.

Around 1910, a player named Jules Lenoir suffered from severe rheumatism. He could no longer run or stand easily to play. His friend, Ernest Pitiot, created a new version to help him. This version reduced the pitch length by half and required players to stand stationary. They called it pieds tanqués, meaning "feet planted." This phrase eventually became the name pétanque.

Today, pétanque is a global phenomenon with many organized bodies. The Fédération Internationale de Pétanque et Jeu Provençal, or FIPJP, governs the sport. Founded in 1958 in Marseille, the FIPJP has nearly 800,000 members. In France, the national federation has over 300,000 licensed members. The game is very popular in Southeast Asian nations like Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam. It is also played in parts of Africa, such as Madagascar. In the United States, the Federation of Pétanque USA reports about 30,000 players. Large events like the Mondial la Marseillaise à Pétanque attract over 150,000 spectators. While not an Olympic sport, it has appeared in every World Games since 1985.
