His music had a very special sound that people could recognize. He used many brass instruments like trumpets and trombones. He also used saxophones to play strong parts in the music. Sometimes he even included an organ in his big band. One of his most famous traits was making short, loud grunts. He would often say "¡Dilo!" which means "Say it!" during a song. This helped make his mambo arrangements feel fiery and full of energy.

Pérez Prado was born in Matanzas, Cuba, on December 11, 1916. His mother, Sara, was a teacher, and his father, Pablo, was a journalist. He grew up studying classical piano and playing in local clubs. He started his career playing piano for a famous group called Sonora Matancera. In 1949, he moved to Mexico to start his own band. He later signed a contract with RCA Victor in the United States. This move helped his music reach even more people around the world.

Many of his songs became huge hits on the music charts. His song "Cherry Pink (and Apple Blossom White)" was a massive success in 1955. It stayed at number one in the U.S. for ten weeks. That song even sold over one million copies and won a gold disc. Another very famous song he wrote is "Mambo No. 5." He also had a hit called "Patricia" in 1958.
