In chemistry, atoms join together in many ways.

Scientists use a tool called an oxidation state to study them. This is a number that shows how an atom behaves. It acts like a charge, which is a way to track electrical parts.

These numbers can be positive, negative, or even zero.

An oxidation state is not a real charge on an atom. Instead, it is a way to help us name things.

For example, we use Roman numerals to name metal compounds. If iron has a state of plus three, we call it Iron(III).

Atoms change their state during chemical reactions. This happens when they move small parts called electrons. When an atom loses electrons, its state goes up. This change is called oxidation. When an atom gains electrons, its state goes down. This is called reduction.

Pure elements always have an oxidation state of zero. Some atoms have very high scores. The highest known state is plus nine. The lowest known state is minus five. These numbers help us predict how atoms will react.
