Otto Lilienthal was a German inventor. People call him the "father of flight." 

Lilienthal built many different gliders. A glider is a flying machine with no engine. 
In 1896, something went wrong. His glider stalled. A stall happens when a wing loses its lift. He could not get control back. He fell from a high hill. He died the next day from his injuries. 
Otto Lilienthal was a famous German inventor who changed how we see the sky. Many people call him the "father of flight" because he proved humans could fly in machines. 

To learn how to fly, Lilienthal studied the natural world. He spent a lot of time watching how birds move. 

Lilienthal began his serious flight experiments in 1891. He worked closely with his brother, Gustav, to build his machines. 
His inventions were very detailed and used many different shapes. 
Sadly, Lilienthal's flying career ended in a crash in 1896. On August 9, the weather was sunny and about 20 degrees Celsius. During one of his flights, his glider stalled. A stall is when a wing loses the lift it needs to stay up. He could not regain control and fell from a height of about 15 meters. He died the next day from his injuries. 
Karl Wilhelm Otto Lilienthal was a German pioneer of aviation. He is often called the "father of flight" or the "father of aviation." This is because he was the first person to make well-documented, repeated, and successful flights using gliders. His work proved that heavier-than-air aircraft could actually work. Before his experiments, many people doubted that humans could fly in machines heavier than air. 
Lilienthal's approach to flight was based on studying nature. He spent significant time observing the flight of birds, specifically white storks. He used polar diagrams to describe the aerodynamics of their wings. This scientific data helped him understand how air moves around a wing. He even published a famous book in 1889 titled "Birdflight as the Basis of Aviation." 
To achieve flight, Lilienthal developed many different types of aircraft. He created a dozen models, including monoplanes with one wing and biplanes with two wings. He also experimented with ornithopters, which are machines designed with flapping wings like a bird. One of his most successful designs was the "Lilienthal Normalsegelapparat," or normal soaring apparatus, from 1894. This design was so effective that at least nine units were sold. His company in Berlin became the first airplane production company in the world. 
Lilienthal controlled his gliders using a method called weight shifting. He would move his body to change the center of gravity, which is the balance point of the machine. This is very similar to how modern hang gliders work. However, his method had limitations. He often held the glider by his shoulders rather than hanging from it. This meant he could only move his legs and lower body to steer. Because of this, his gliders could be difficult to maneuver and tended to pitch downward. 
Between 1891 and 1896, Lilienthal completed over 2,000 flights. He performed these flights from natural hills in the Rhinow region and from an artificial hill he built called Fliegeberg. In 1891, his flights covered distances of about 250 meters. By 1893, he achieved a flight distance of 250 meters, which was a record at the time. His total flying time throughout his career was approximately five hours.
Lilienthal's influence spread across the globe through newspapers and scientific journals. His flight photographs reached many people and changed public opinion about flying machines. Famous scientists and pioneers from the United States, Russia, England, and Austria came to visit him. For example, the Russian scientist Nikolai Zhukovsky called Lilienthal's machine the most important invention in aviation. 
On August 9, 1896, Lilienthal experienced a fatal accident during a flight in the Rhinow Hills. The temperature was about 20 degrees Celsius. During his fourth flight, his glider stalled, meaning it lost the lift required to stay airborne. Because he could not regain control through weight shifting, he fell about 15 meters. He suffered a fracture of his third cervical vertebra and died the following day. 
Even though his life ended, his scientific contributions changed the world. He held 25 different patents for his inventions, including a safe tubular boiler engine. His research into wing shapes and aerodynamics provided the foundation for modern flight. Today, original gliders from his collection are preserved in museums in Washington, D.C., London, Moscow, and Munich. His legacy lives on in every modern airplane that flies through the sky.
