Osama bin Laden was the founder and first general emir of al-Qaeda. He was an Islamic extremist and a pan-Islamist leader. This means he believed that Islam should rule social and political life. He used his organization to fund and lead many terrorist attacks worldwide. His actions changed how many countries interact with one another.

His leadership led to the global war on terror. This period of history began after major attacks against the United States.

Bin Laden was born on March 10, 1957, in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. He came from a very wealthy family. His father, Muhammad bin Ladin, ran the Saudi Binladin Group. This was a massive construction company. It had the exclusive right to build religious buildings for the Saudi royal family.

Osama was the 17th of his father's approximately 52 children. In 1967, his father died in an airplane crash. Osama studied economics and business at King Abdulaziz University in Jeddah. During his studies, he focused heavily on the Quran and the concept of jihad.

Jihad refers to a struggle in the name of Islam. This struggle can be peaceful or violent. Bin Laden believed that violent jihad was necessary to fix perceived injustices. He subscribed to the Athari school of Islamic theology. This school interprets the Quran literally rather than figuratively. He rejected democratic systems and other forms of government. He believed these systems used man-made laws instead of laws made by God.

He wanted to see the complete restoration of Sharia, which is Islamic law, across the Islamic world.

His political path began during the Soviet-Afghan War from 1979 to 1989. He left Saudi Arabia to help the Afghan mujahideen fight the Soviet Union. In 1984, he co-founded Maktab al-Khidamat to recruit foreigners into the fight. By 1988, he founded al-Qaeda to enact violent jihad on a global scale. When the Soviets left Afghanistan in 1989, he returned to Saudi Arabia. However, his public beliefs led to his expulsion from the country in 1991. He then moved his organization to Sudan.

In Sudan, bin Laden helped start the Algerian Civil War. He also aided the mujahideen during the Bosnian War between 1992 and 1995. Sudan expelled him in 1996, so he moved to Afghanistan. There, al-Qaeda allied with the Taliban government. Bin Laden declared war on the United States in 1996. He was specifically angry about American troops being stationed in Saudi Arabia. He viewed the presence of non-believers in Arabia as a violation of religious rules.

The 9/11 attacks led the United States to invade Afghanistan. This started the War in Afghanistan, which lasted from 2001 to 2021. The U.S. deposed the Taliban, forcing bin Laden to flee to Pakistan. Al-Qaeda continued to strike other locations. They attacked Indonesia in 2002 and Turkey in 2003. They also carried out attacks in England and Jordan in 2005.

An international manhunt for bin Laden continued for many years.

In 2011, U.S. troops located bin Laden at a compound in Pakistan. They killed him during this mission.
