He lived during a time when musical styles were changing. His work helped bridge the gap between the Renaissance and the Baroque periods. This means his music sat between two different eras of art. He was part of the English Virginalist and Madrigal Schools. These were groups of musicians who shared similar styles. Even though he died young, he was a master of his craft.

Gibbons learned music through his family and his studies. His father and brothers were all musicians. He likely learned to play the keyboard in his youth. He might have studied with his brother Edward or the famous composer William Byrd. By age 12, he was a member of the choir at King's College, Cambridge. He later earned a Bachelor of Music degree from the same college in 1606. He was very skilled at playing instruments like the organ.

His career was filled with important jobs and famous friends. In 1603, he joined the Chapel Royal as an unpaid substitute. By 1605, he became a full Gentleman of the Chapel Royal. This was a prestigious role as a junior organist. He also worked for King James I and Prince Charles. In 1623, he reached his most important job at Westminster Abbey. He served as the organist there for two years.

Gibbons left behind many beautiful pieces of music. In 1612, he published his First Set of Madrigals and Motets. This collection included "The Silver Swan," which is a very famous English madrigal. He also contributed to a book called Parthenia in 1613. This was the first printed collection of English keyboard music. It included his work alongside older masters like Byrd and John Bull. He wrote many other pieces, such as "O Clap Your Hands Together."

His musical legacy helped many people who came after him. His son, Christopher Gibbons, became a composer too. Christopher taught other important musicians like Henry Purcell. Today, people still love to listen to his work. Many early music groups perform his madrigals and viol fantasies. Famous players like Glenn Gould have also championed his keyboard music. Almost all of his music has been recorded for us to hear.
