In the Arabic medieval world, some scholars even added Aristotle's *Rhetoric* and *Poetics* to the Organon list.
The arrangement of these books was not accidental. While the original order of Aristotle's writing is hard to determine, the current structure was a deliberate choice. Theophrastus helped organize the texts into a system that resembles a lecture scheme on logic. Later, around 40 BC, Andronicus of Rhodes arranged them into the formal collection we recognize today. These works were originally used at the Lyceum, the school founded by Aristotle. This careful organization transformed separate writings into a unified educational system.
The history of the Organon is a story of survival and translation. After the Western Roman Empire collapsed in the fifth century, many of Aristotle's works were lost in Western Europe. Only *Categories* and *On Interpretation* remained widely available in the Latin West during the early Middle Ages. However, the Greek-speaking Eastern Roman Empire preserved the original texts. After 750 AD, Muslim scholars translated most of the works into Arabic, often using Syriac versions as a guide. This allowed scholars like Ibn Rushd and Moses Maimonides to study them deeply in places like Córdoba, Spain.
In the 12th century, these ideas returned to Western Christendom. James of Venice translated the *Posterior Analytics* from Greek manuscripts found in Constantinople. This helped spark a massive interest among medieval Christian scholars, known as Scholastics. Many major thinkers, such as Aquinas, Ockham, and Scotus, wrote extensive commentaries on the Organon. Because of this massive influence, medieval scholars often referred to Aristotle simply as "The Philosopher." His logic became the standard for academic study for centuries.
Even as modern science and math changed the world, the Organon remained relevant. In 1620, Francis Bacon published *Novum Organum*, or "The New Organon," to challenge traditional Aristotelian methods. During the 19th century, new developments in predicate logic caused some philosophers to move away from Aristotle. However, modern historians show that these new systems are actually extensions of his work. For example, George Boole and Gottlob Frege built upon the foundations Aristotle laid. Their work in mathematical logic continues the tradition of the Organon in a modern form.
