The Orange River is the longest river in South Africa. It is a vital waterway in Southern Africa. The river basin covers a massive area of land. This catchment area extends over 1,150,000 square kilometers. This size is equivalent to about 77% of South Africa's land area. However, about 38% of this basin sits outside South Africa. It reaches into Lesotho, Botswana, and Namibia.
The river begins its journey in the Drakensberg mountains. These mountains are located in Lesotho. At this high altitude, the river is called the Senqu River.
The river's course changes as it moves through different landscapes. In the beginning, the river bed is deeply incised. This means the water has cut deep channels into the earth. As it flows through the Free State province, it enters large reservoirs. The river flows into the Gariep Dam and then the Vanderkloof Dam.

In its final stretch, the river reaches the Namib Desert. The desert terminates on the north bank of the river. During this stage, the river receives water from intermittent streams. One example is the Fish River. However, the volume of water from these sources is often negligible. The river bed becomes deeply incised once again here. A major feature in this section is the Augrabies Falls. At this site, the river descends over a distance of 20 meters.
Many different names have been used for this river throughout history. Early precolonial inhabitants called it ǂNūǃarib because of its black color. They also used the name Kai !Arib, meaning "Great River." This name is the source of the Afrikaans word Gariep. In 1779, the Dutch explorer Robert Jacob Gordon gave it a new name. He named it the Orange River to honor the House of Orange. This was the Dutch ruling family. Some people wrongly believe the name refers to the color of the water.
The Orange River is essential for the South African economy. It provides water for irrigation, industry, and mining. The Orange River Project was built to use these waters. This project helps provide water to dry areas like the Eastern Cape. The Gariep Dam is the largest dam in South Africa.
Agriculture and mining also rely on the river. In flatter areas, the water is used for extensive irrigation. This has turned dry land into productive farms. You can see vineyards growing near the river.

Today, the river is also a place for recreation. People enjoy rafting and canoeing on the water. This is popular because the water is high in summer. There are few dangerous animals in the river. Many companies run trips through the gorge below the Augrabies Falls.
