The geography of the province is very diverse. The central areas are mostly flat with salt pans. The south and southeast consist of high-lying districts called Roggeveld and Nuweveld. These areas are part of the Karoo Basin. This basin is made mostly of sedimentary rocks. Some dolerite intrusions also exist here. In the west, the Namaqualand region dominates the landscape. This area is hilly or mountainous. It is made of granites and metamorphic rocks.

The north is primarily the Kalahari Desert. This desert features parallel red sand dunes and acacia tree dry savanna.

Water is a vital resource in this arid environment. The Orange River, or Gariep River, is the major river system. It drains the interior of South Africa toward the Atlantic Ocean. The river forms borders with Namibia and the Free State. Near Upington, the river irrigates many vineyards.

The Vaal River is the principal tributary of the Orange. Other important rivers include the Harts, the Riet, and the Brak. The Molopo River flows from the Kalahari in the north. It helps define the international boundary between South Africa and Botswana. These rivers provide life to the dry landscape.

The climate is mostly arid or semiarid. Very few areas receive more than 400 mm of rainfall per year. The average annual rainfall is only 250 mm. Rainfall generally increases from the west toward the east. The west gets most rain in winter. The east receives moisture from late summer thunderstorms. Many areas experience extreme heat. The hottest temperatures in South Africa are measured along the Namibian border. In winter, the southern areas can be bitterly cold. Sutherland is a place that often receives snow.

The province has a deep archaeological history. Stone Age heritage is very rich here. Wonderwerk Cave near Kuruman contains a sequence of history. Some layers go back more than 1 million years. These layers contain very old stone tools. There are also many rock art sites. Most of these are rock engravings. You can find them on hilltops or in river beds. During the Iron Age, farming spread through the northeast. Sites like Dithakong show this history. Later, copper mines and diamond rushes changed the landscape. The diamond rush in Kimberley helped start the modern era.

Demographics show a diverse population of 1,355,629 people.

About 50.1% of the people identify as Black African. About 41.6% identify as Coloured. This is a higher proportion than in most other provinces. The median age of the population is 27. Languages are also very important. There are four official languages: Afrikaans, Tswana, Xhosa, and English.

Afrikaans is the most common first language at 54.6%. The province is also home to the San people. They were awarded a settlement in Platfontein in 1999.

The Northern Cape has a unique cultural identity. The provincial motto is in the Nǀu language. It says, "We go to a better life."

This was the first officially registered motto in a Khoisan language. It was given in 1997 by Elsie Vaalbooi. She was one of the last speakers of that language. Most people in the province, about 97.8%, are Christian. The political system is a parliamentary one. The premier is elected by the provincial legislature. The current premier is Zamani Saul. He has held this position since 2019.
