A sol is just a day on Mars. However, Opportunity was much tougher than anyone expected. It stayed active for many years and far exceeded its planned lifespan.

Opportunity completed many amazing tasks during its long journey. It explored many different areas like Endurance crater and Victoria crater.

One famous discovery was Heat Shield Rock, which was an intact meteorite. The rover also reached Endeavour crater in August 2011. It even took a self-portrait of itself in 2018.

By the time it stopped talking to Earth, it had traveled a very long distance. It worked for 55 times longer than its original 90-sol goal.

Everything changed in June 2018 when a huge dust storm hit Mars. The dust in the air was so thick that it blocked the sun. Because the solar panels could not get enough light, the rover lost power.

The last contact with the rover was on June 10, 2018. NASA sent over 1,000 signals to try and wake it up. They hoped the wind might blow the dust off the panels. But the rover did not respond, and the mission ended in February 2019. It remains one of the most successful missions NASA ever sent to space.

Opportunity, also known as MER-B or MER-1, was a highly successful robotic rover. It was a central part of NASA's Mars Exploration Rover program. This program aimed to explore the Martian surface to find clues about past water activity. Scientists wanted to see if liquid water once existed on Mars. They also wanted to know if those environments could have supported life. By studying rocks and soil, the rover helped answer these big questions.

The rover functioned through a sophisticated system of solar power. It used solar arrays to collect energy from sunlight. This process generated about 140 watts of power for up to fourteen hours each sol. A sol is a single day on Mars. The rover stored this energy in rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. These batteries allowed the rover to continue operating during the Martian night. To stay safe, the rover could enter hibernation during dust storms to conserve its power reserves.

Opportunity was built to navigate the difficult Martian terrain. It used a rocker-bogie system to manage its six wheels. This design allowed the rover to drive over very rough ground. Each of the six wheels had its own dedicated motor. The rover could steer using both its front and rear wheels. It was even designed to operate safely on tilts of up to 30 degrees. While its maximum speed was higher, it usually traveled at an average speed of about 0.04 miles per hour.

The mission began with a complex launch and landing sequence. Opportunity launched on July 7, 2003, using a Delta II Heavy rocket. This launch followed a delay caused by winds and the need to replace a battery and insulation. The rover landed on January 25, 2004, in an area called Meridiani Planum. It settled into the Eagle crater using an airbag-protected landing craft. This landing occurred just three weeks after its twin rover, Spirit, arrived on the other side of the planet.

Opportunity's scientific work was incredibly productive over many years. One major goal was to search for minerals deposited by water-related processes. These processes include precipitation, evaporation, and hydrothermal activity. The rover looked for iron-bearing carbonates and other minerals that form in water. It also helped validate observations made by the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO). By comparing ground data with orbital data, scientists could confirm the accuracy of their instruments.

The rover's journey took it across many famous Martian landmarks. After landing, it explored the Endurance crater from June to December 2004. It also discovered Heat Shield Rock, which was an intact meteorite. Later, the rover spent over two years studying the rim and interior of Victoria crater. In August 2011, it reached Endeavour crater, which served as a second landing site. By June 10, 2018, the rover had traveled a total distance of 28 miles.

Opportunity was much more durable than NASA originally planned. The mission was designed to last only 90 sols, which is about 92.5 Earth days. However, the rover operated for 5,703 sols. This means it lasted 55 times longer than its intended lifespan. Even as it aged, the rover faced challenges like "amnesia" events. These were hardware faults in its memory banks that caused the vehicle to reset. To fix this, engineers configured the rover to operate in RAM-only mode in 2015.

The mission ended due to a massive planetary-scale dust storm in 2018. This storm caused the atmospheric opacity, or tau, to reach a record high of 10.8. Because of the thick dust, the solar panels could not generate enough power. The last contact from the rover occurred on June 10, 2018, from Perseverance Valley. NASA sent over 1,000 signals to try to wake the rover, but it never responded. On February 13, 2019, NASA officially declared the mission complete. The final data sent from the rover included the song "I'll Be Seeing You" by Billie Holiday.
