Opinion

An opinion is a viewpoint or a judgment. It is not the same as a fact. Facts are statements that are true and can be checked. Experts can agree on facts through a shared consensus.

Opinions deal with things that are not conclusive. They might come from a person's feelings or their beliefs. One person might see a fact one way. Another person might see it another way. This is why opinions are different from facts.

Sometimes an opinion becomes a strong argument. This happens when someone uses facts to support their idea. People can look at the same set of facts but reach different conclusions. Most opinions do not change easily. They usually need new arguments to change a person's mind. You can study an argument to see if it is well-supported. Some opinions are better supported by facts than others. This is how we analyze different points of view.

Many people can share the same view at once. We call the total view of a population public opinion. It is very hard to ask every single person in a country their thoughts. Instead, researchers use a method called survey sampling. This uses a small group to represent the whole population.

Companies also look at consumer opinion. They use marketing research to see what people think of a product. This helps them understand what many people want or need.

Experts also have special types of opinions. Scientists share their views in scholarly journals or textbooks. This work often goes through peer-review to stay accurate. When most scientists agree on a topic, it is called a scientific consensus.

Scientific opinions can sometimes be uncertain or conflicting. This means there may not be one single accepted view. Lawyers also provide professional opinions to their clients. A lawyer might write a legal opinion about a business deal. A judge writes a judicial opinion to explain a court ruling.

There are even formal rules for opinions in the European Union. The European Commission can issue a reasoned opinion to a Member State. This happens if they think a country is not following an EU law. This request usually has a two month deadline.

Member States can also issue their own reasoned opinions. They might do this regarding new laws from the EU. This is part of a process to make sure rules are followed correctly. Understanding these different views helps us navigate our world.
