One Direction, often called 1D, was an English and Irish pop boy band.

The group consisted of Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, and Zayn Malik. They became one of the best-selling boy bands in history. Before their hiatus in 2016, they sold over 70 million records worldwide. This massive success made them a global phenomenon. Their popularity was often compared to the intense fan excitement known as Beatlemania. They were not just musicians but also a massive business empire.

The band formed through the British singing competition, The X Factor, in 2010. Initially, the five members auditioned as solo singers. They all failed to progress past the bootcamp stage as individuals. However, judges Nicole Scherzinger and Simon Cowell helped form them into a five-piece group.

Harry Styles chose the name for the band. Their first performance as a group was an acoustic version of the song "Torn." They finished the competition in third place. Shortly after, they signed a record contract with Syco Records worth a reported £2 million.

Their musical career was defined by rapid international growth and chart-topping records. Their debut single, "What Makes You Beautiful," was a massive commercial success. It reached number one on the UK singles chart. The group also performed this song at the 2012 Summer Olympics closing ceremony. Their first studio album, Up All Night, was released in 2011. This album made them the first British act to top the Billboard 200 charts in the United States.

They continued this streak with several more successful releases. Their first four albums all debuted at number one on the charts. These albums included Take Me Home, Midnight Memories, and Four.

One Direction's live performances were massive in scale and economic impact. They embarked on four world tours during their career. Two of these tours were held in large stadiums.

Their Where We Are Tour, supporting the album Midnight Memories, was particularly notable. In 2014, it became the highest-grossing concert tour by a vocal group in history. The tour grossed $290 million. This made it the 15th-highest-grossing concert tour of all time. The band's ability to sell out venues was proven early on when their Up All Night Tour tickets sold out in just 12 minutes.

The group received immense professional recognition through numerous industry awards. They won nearly 200 awards during their time together. This included seven Brit Awards and four MTV Video Music Awards. They also earned six Billboard Music Awards and seven American Music Awards. In 2013, the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry named them Global Recording Artist of the Year. Billboard also named them Artist of the Year in 2014. Their financial success was also significant. Forbes ranked them as the second highest-earning celebrities in the world in 2016.

Beyond music, the band used their platform to support various social causes. They raised millions of dollars for charities. These included support for cancer research and autism awareness. They also worked to spread awareness about global issues. These issues included poverty and climate change. This showed that their influence extended beyond the music charts and into social activism. Their connection to fans was also deepened through the use of social media. This helped propel them to global success in a way that was unique to their era.

The band's lineup changed toward the end of their time together. Zayn Malik departed from the group in 2015.

Their fifth and final album before their break was titled Made in the A.M. In January 2016, the band entered an indefinite hiatus. This decision allowed all the members to pursue individual solo projects. While they no longer perform as a single group, their impact on pop culture remains. They helped define the boy band era of the early 21st century through record-breaking sales and global tours.
