This film was inspired by real events and writing. It was based on articles from the New York Sun published in 1948. Those articles won a Pulitzer Prize for local reporting. The screenplay was written by Budd Schulberg. Schulberg spent two years researching the story on the docks. He attended meetings and visited waterfront bars to see how things worked. He wanted to make sure the setting felt real for the audience.

The movie was a huge success when it was released. It earned about $4.2 million at the box office in North America. The film received twelve Academy Award nominations and won eight prizes. These included Best Picture and Best Director for Elia Kazan. Marlon Brando won Best Actor for his powerful performance. Eva Marie Saint also won Best Supporting Actress in her film debut. In 1989, the Library of Congress selected it for preservation in the National Film Registry. This means the film is seen as historically and culturally important.

Many famous actors and directors talk about this movie today. Marlon Brando's acting helped change how people perform in films. Director Martin Scorsese said Brando's work was like pure poetry. Other famous actors, like Anthony Hopkins and Al Pacino, have praised the film. The music was also very special. It was composed by Leonard Bernstein. This was the only time he wrote an original score for a movie. Even years later, people still find the film breathtaking and important.
