Later, groups like the Chorotega and Nicarao people lived there too. They carved statues out of basalt rock. They also left art on big stones called petroglyphs.

Some of these carvings show spirals or turtles. Other carvings show people with faces like bowling balls. These old carvings tell us about the island's long past.

Life on the island is tied to the volcanoes. The old volcanic ash makes the soil very fertile. This means plants grow very well there.
