It sits within three areas called the Republic of Karelia, Leningrad Oblast, and Vologda Oblast. This lake is very important because it is the second-largest lake in Europe.

It is actually a bit smaller than the country of Lebanon. About 50 different rivers flow into the lake to feed it. One single river, called the Svir, carries the water away. The lake is part of a large system that leads to the Baltic Sea.

The lake has a very interesting shape and bottom. The northern banks are rocky and rugged with many deep bays. These bays make the lake look like a giant crayfish.

The southern banks are much lower and more swampy. The bottom is not flat at all. It has many deep trenches and shallow banks. These banks are great spots for commercial fishing. The water is fresh and can be very clear in deep parts.

This lake was formed a long time ago by ice. About 12,000 years ago, huge ice sheets carved the land.

Before the ice age, this area was actually under a sea. As the ice melted, it left behind parts of the sea. This created the large lakes we see in northern Europe today. The lake is still quite young in geological terms. It is a remnant of a much larger body of water.

Lake Onega is a massive body of fresh water located in northwestern Russia.

Onego lake.jpg
Onego lake.jpg
It spans across three administrative regions: the Republic of Karelia, Leningrad Oblast, and Vologda Oblast. As the second-largest lake in Europe, its surface area is slightly smaller than the country of Lebanon.

The lake serves as a vital part of the Baltic Sea basin. It is fed by approximately 50 different rivers that bring in fresh water. The Svir River acts as the single primary outlet, draining the lake toward Lake Ladoga. This connection eventually leads to the Gulf of Finland and the Baltic Sea.

The geological history of Lake Onega reveals a landscape shaped by extreme forces. The lake is of glacial-tectonic origin, meaning it was formed by both tectonic movements and ice.

Onego lake.jpg
Onego lake.jpg
During the Paleozoic Era, 400 to 300 million years ago, this entire area was covered by a shelf sea. Over time, layers of sandstone, sand, clay, and limestone settled over the Baltic Shield. The Baltic Shield is a base layer made of granite, gneiss, and greenstone. About 12,000 years ago, during the last Ice Age, massive inland ice sheets carved the land. As these glaciers retreated, they left behind the Littorina Sea. The gradual lowering of sea levels eventually formed the various lakes we see in northern Europe today.

The physical layout of the lake is complex and varies by direction. The southern banks are mostly low, continuous, and swampy. In contrast, the northern banks are rocky and rugged.

These northern shores contain many elongated bays, giving the lake an outline similar to a giant crayfish. The western area, known as Greater Onega, is particularly deep, reaching depths greater than 100 meters. This area includes several large bays like the Kondopozhskaya and Lizhemskoy bays. To the east, the Zaonezhye Peninsula sits near the Povenetsky and Zaonezhsky bays. The lake's bottom is very uneven, featuring deep trenches and large shallow banks. These banks are highly beneficial for commercial fishing.

Lake Onega is home to about 1,650 islands, which add great variety to the landscape.

The largest island is Big Klimenetsky, which covers an area of about 100 square kilometers. It contains small settlements, a school, and a hill. The most famous island is Kizhi, which hosts a significant historical complex.

This complex includes 89 Orthodox churches and other wooden structures built between the 15th and 20th centuries. The Kizhi Pogost is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Additionally, the eastern shores contain about 1,200 petroglyphs. These are ancient rock engravings dating back to the 4th–2nd millennia BC and are also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The ecology of the lake supports a diverse range of life. The surrounding forests are dense and primarily coniferous, though they also include lime, elm, and European alder trees.

Many mammals live in this region, such as elks, brown bears, wolves, and lynxes. Some animals, like American muskrats and minks, were introduced in the early 20th century. The water supports 47 different fish species, including sturgeon, landlocked salmon, and pike.

Some species, like the lamprey, are considered relicts from the glacial period. While the water is generally clear in deep sections, visibility can drop to one meter in the bays.

Human activity plays a major role in the lake's economy and environment. Major cities like Petrozavodsk, Kondopoga, and Medvezhyegorsk are located on its shores.

Petrozavodsk port.jpg

The lake is a hub for transportation, connected to the Volga–Baltic Waterway and the White Sea–Baltic Canal. These systems allow goods to be moved from the Baltic to the Caspian and Black Seas.

However, industrial growth in these cities has increased pollution levels. Sewage, drainage, and emissions from these urban areas affect the water quality. Additionally, about 8,000 ships and motorboats contribute oil pollution to the ecosystem each year.

Energy and industry are also closely tied to the lake. The water level is managed by two hydroelectric power plants: the Nizhnesvirskaya and the Verkhnesvirskaya.

Old Petrozavodsk.jpg
Old Petrozavodsk.jpg
The Verkhnesvirskaya plant, completed in 1952, provides 160 MW of electric power. Its associated reservoir is nearly as large as Lake Onega itself. Beyond energy, the region is a major source of granite, marble, and black schist. Metallurgy is also a significant industry, particularly near Petrozavodsk. This combination of natural resources and water transport makes Lake Onega a vital economic center for Russia.
