The city is recognized for a high quality of life. It ranks highly in metrics for income, employment, and safety. Many people consider it one of the happiest cities in Poland.

The history of the settlement began in the Middle Ages. In 1334, a watchtower was first established on the Łyna River. By 1346, workers cleared the local forest to allow for a new settlement. This settlement was mentioned in a historical document from 1348. In 1349, the Teutonic Knights began building an Ordensburg, or castle. This stronghold was intended to defend against the Baltic Prussians. The town was officially granted municipal rights in October 1353.

The German name, Allenstein, likely came from the Baltic Prussian name for the river, Alna, which meant a hind.

Throughout the following centuries, the city changed hands many times. The town was captured by the Kingdom of Poland in 1410 and again in 1414. However, it was eventually returned to the Teutonic Knights. In 1454, the city joined the Prussian Confederation and rebelled against the Teutonic Knights. This rebellion was part of the Thirteen Years' War. The townspeople took control of the castle and recognized King Casimir IV Jagiellon as their ruler. After several conflicts, the Second Peace of Thorn in 1466 confirmed the city as part of the Kingdom of Poland.

A famous figure in the city's history is Nicolaus Copernicus.

His presence helped usher in a golden age for the region. During this period, trade grew because the city sat on the Warsaw-Königsberg trade route.

The city faced many hardships during the early modern era. In the 1620s, a fire and an epidemic halted local prosperity. Later, Swedish troops sacked the town in 1655 and 1708 during the Polish-Swedish wars. In 1710, the population was nearly wiped out by cholera and the bubonic plague. In 1772, the city became part of the Kingdom of Prussia following the First Partition of Poland. At that time, the population was only 1,770 people, mostly farmers.

Despite various political shifts, the city remained a vital Polish center. During the interwar period, many Polish organizations operated there. These included the Polish Scouting and Guiding Association and various Polish newspapers. However, the Nazi seizure of power in 1933 led to increased persecution of Poles and Jews. This period of tension continued through the outbreak of World War II.

Today, Olsztyn is a modern hub for higher education. In 1999, the University of Warmia and Masuria was founded. This university was created from the fusion of three local universities.
