Oliver Winchester was a famous American businessman. He was born in Boston in 1810. At first, he made clothes for people. Later, he saw a chance to make something new. He bought a company that made tools for shooting. This company was called the Volcanic Repeating Arms Company.

At first, the tools did not work well. The small parts they used were not strong. Then, an engineer named Benjamin Tyler Henry helped. He made a better part called a cartridge. This part was made of brass. It helped make the Henry rifle. This rifle was very popular. The company then changed its name to the Winchester Repeating Arms Company.

In 1866, a new model came out. It had a loading gate on the side. This helped the tool work even better. Many people used these rifles when they moved west. Some called it "The Gun that Won the West." Oliver also worked in politics. He was a leader in Connecticut. He died in 1880. His son, William, took over the company. William died one year later.
