Perry's naval career began when he was very young. On April 7, 1799, he became a midshipman at age thirteen. He sailed on the ship General Greene with his father. He served in many different places during his early years. He saw action in the West Indies during the Quasi War. He also served in the Mediterranean during the Barbary Wars. Later, he worked in the Caribbean to fight piracy. In 1811, his ship, the Revenge, ran aground near Rhode Island. Perry stayed to help his crew escape the sinking ship. He was the very last person to leave the vessel.

During the War of 1812, Perry played a very important role. The British Navy had a lot of control over the Great Lakes. Perry was put in charge of the American forces on Lake Erie. He helped supervise the building of a new fleet in Erie, Pennsylvania. On September 10, 1813, he led his ships into a major battle. This was the Battle of Lake Erie. Perry's first ship was the Lawrence. During the fight, the Lawrence was badly damaged. The British thought Perry would surrender his ship.

Instead of quitting, Perry showed great courage. He used a flag that said "DONT GIVE UP THE SHIP." This was a tribute to his friend, Captain James Lawrence. Perry and a few crew members rowed a small boat through heavy gunfire. They rowed half a mile to reach a new ship called the Niagara. Once he was on the Niagara, Perry led his fleet to victory. He captured six British ships. He sent a famous message to General William Henry Harrison. He wrote, "We have met the enemy and they are ours."

Perry's victory was a major turning point in the war. It helped protect the Ohio Valley and opened Canada to American invasions. Because of his success, people called him the "Hero of Lake Erie." He received a Congressional Gold Medal for his bravery. His life was so interesting that many books were written about him. Many ships and places are named in his honor today. Even the U.S. Navy flies a flag that reminds people of his words.
