Oliver Hart is a very important economist. An economist is a person who studies how money and resources work. He is famous for his work on contract theory. This is the study of how people make deals. He also looks at how big companies are run. His ideas help us understand how ownership works.

His work focuses on something called incomplete contracts. This means that people cannot plan for every single thing that might happen. No matter how hard they try, they cannot write a deal for every tiny event. Hart studies how this affects how companies are organized. He looks at how ownership and rules help a business work well. This helps explain why some companies are built in certain ways.

Oliver Hart was born in Britain on October 9, 1948. His parents were both medical researchers. He studied mathematics at King's College, Cambridge, in 1969. Later, he earned a degree in economics from Princeton University in 1974. He taught at many places like the University of Essex and the London School of Economics. In 1984, he moved to the United States to teach. He has been a professor at Harvard University since 1993.

Many people have recognized his hard work. In 2016, he won the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences. He shared this big prize with Bengt Holmström. They won for their important research on contract theory. In 2023, he was also named a knight. This was part of the Birthday Honours. He has also been a member of the National Academy of Sciences.

His ideas are used in real life today. He has even worked as an expert in legal cases. In these cases, the government used his research about companies. This helped them decide on important tax matters. Hart lives in the U.S. with his wife, Rita B. Goldberg. She is a professor at Harvard who writes about history. They have two sons and two grandsons.
