Old media

technology Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Before the internet, most people used old media. This includes things like newspapers, radio, and TV. Old media is often called legacy media. These companies send news one way to many people. They are not like new media. New media uses the internet and smartphones. It lets people talk to each other easily.

History shows how media changed. In 1440, Johannes Gutenberg made a printing press. This let people make many identical books. It was better than writing by hand. In 1897, Guglielmo Marconi patented the radio. By the 1920s, many people could listen to the same event at once. Later, Philo Farnsworth invented the first modern TV in 1927.

In the 1950s, TV became very popular in America. By the 1970s, many people watched news on TV. Today, old media faces new challenges. The internet and streaming have changed things. Many newspapers have lost money or closed down. Some people say old media is dying. But others think it is just a part of a long line of tools. We can think of media as a spectrum, or a wide range, from old to new.
