Off-road racing

sports Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Off-road racing is a diverse form of motorsport. It involves specially-modified vehicles racing through natural environments. These terrains include dirt, mud, snow, and sand. Drivers use many machines, such as cars, SUVs, trucks, motorbikes, quadbikes, and buggies. This sport is defined by its departure from paved roads. Instead, it tests the limits of both machine and driver against the earth.

Desert racing is a primary format for these competitions. Most desert races take place on government recreational land. The tracks vary greatly in length. Some routes are only 25 miles long. Others can stretch for 1,000 miles. To keep races fair, organizers use different vehicle classes. These classes are determined by engine size or suspension systems. Vehicles in different classes may run a different number of laps. This ensures that smaller machines can compete meaningfully against larger ones.

Short course racing offers a different experience. These races occur on closed circuits that are less than five miles long. A famous example is the Crandon International Off-Road Raceway.

These tracks feature many obstacles. Drivers must navigate left and right turns with various radii. They also face jumps, gravel pits, and washboard runs. Some formats even use temporary tracks. Stadium racing involves building a track inside a stadium. Additionally, Tough Truck competitions at county fairs use much shorter tracks for individual timed runs.

Desert racing has a long history in North America. It began during the early 20th century. In 1967, Ed Pearlman co-founded the National Off-Road Racing Association (NORRA). This was one of the first sanctioning bodies for the sport. The first major event was a race across the Mexican desert. It ran through most of the Baja California peninsula. It originally traveled from Ensenada to La Paz. This race was called the Mexican 1000. It later became the famous Baja 1000. Today, SCORE International sanctions this event.

Various series and organizations have shaped the sport. The Best in the Desert series is very popular. It hosts the Vegas to Reno race. In 2009, this race measured 1,000 miles. This makes it the longest off-road race in the United States. The Mojave Off-Road Racing Enthusiast (MORE) series began in 1997. It is a family-oriented series in California's Mojave Desert. Other organizations include King of the Hammers, started in 2007 by Dave Cole and Jeff Knoll. However, some series have ended. The TORC series cancelled all events in 2018. The Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series closed in 2020.

Off-road racing takes many forms globally. In New Zealand, the Taupo 1000 is a major event. It is a two-day, 1,000 km international endurance race. It started in 1992 as the Bridgestone 1000. In Australia, racing often uses private land. They use many classes to improve competition. For example, the 'Pro' class includes buggies with engines up to 6000cc. The Finke Desert Race is a famous Australian event. It is 460km long and runs near Alice Springs. The winner earns the title 'King of the Desert.'

In Europe, the term often refers to unsealed circuits. This includes autocross or rallycross. Scandinavian countries feature Formula Off Road. This involves driving modified vehicles up steep, uphill terrain. Other formats include beach racing in northern Europe. Hillclimbing is another related activity. The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb is a famous example in the United States. Even snow is used in races like the Frozen Rush. There, trophy trucks race on snowy ski slopes. This shows how off-road racing connects to almost any natural landscape.
