Odysseus is a legendary figure in Greek and Roman mythology.

He was the king of Ithaca and a central hero in Homer's epic poems. Most people know him from the *Odyssey*, which tells the story of his long journey home. He also plays a significant role in the *Iliad*. Odysseus is defined by his intellectual brilliance and his ability to use guile. This cleverness earned him the epithet *polytropos*. This Greek term means a man of many turns or twists.

His most famous journey is his *nostos*, or homecoming. This trip took ten years to complete after the decade-long Trojan War ended.

Scholars have studied many different versions of his name. In Greek, the form *Odysseus* was used through the classical period. However, vase inscriptions show many variants like *Oliseus* or *Olyseus*. In Latin, he was known as Ulysses.

Some historians suggest that Odysseus and Ulysses might have originally been two separate figures. Later, these two personalities were combined into one complex character. The exact origin of his name remains unknown. Some ancient authors linked it to Greek verbs meaning to be wroth or to lament. Others suggested it might relate to the verb meaning to perish. In one story, his grandfather Autolycus named him because he had been angered by many people.

Odysseus had a complex and varied physical description in ancient texts.

In the accounts of Dares the Phrygian, he was described as tough, crafty, and wise. He was of medium height but possessed a broad chest and wide shoulders. In the *Iliad*, King Priam compared him to a sturdy ram in a large flock. Other descriptions mention his bushy hair, which was compared to hyacinth petals. He was also said to have a bronze tan and massive thighs. These details help readers visualize a man who was both imposing and physically capable.

His family history is filled with both myth and mystery.

His parents were Laertes and Anticlea. Some non-Homeric traditions even claimed that Sisyphus was his true father. This rumor suggested that Laertes had actually bought Odysseus from the king. His genealogy is also linked to the gods. According to Pseudo-Apollodorus, his maternal grandfather was the thief Autolycus. Since Autolycus was the son of Hermes, this makes Odysseus a great-grandson of the god Hermes. He had a son named Telemachus and a daughter. He was also married to Penelope.

Before the Trojan War began, Odysseus tried to avoid fighting. An oracle had prophesied that he would face a long delay if he went to war. To stay home, he feigned madness by plowing his fields with an ox and a donkey. He even tried to sow his fields with salt to look insane. However, a man named Palamedes saw through the trick. Palamedes placed Odysseus's infant son, Telemachus, in front of the plow. Odysseus immediately veered away to avoid hitting the child. This action proved he was sane and forced him to join the war.

During the Trojan War, Odysseus was a vital leader for the Greeks.

He served as a trusted counselor alongside Nestor and Idomeneus. He often championed the Achaean cause when others doubted the leadership of Agamemnon. One of his key tasks was helping to recruit the hero Achilles. Achilles was hiding on the island of Scyros disguised as a woman. Odysseus discovered him by watching how the women reacted to hidden weapons. Once found, Achilles joined the Greek army. Odysseus also participated in various battles and helped manage the Greek camp during difficult times.

Odysseus is often viewed as the opposite of Achilles. While Achilles was known for his intense and self-destructive anger, Odysseus was known for his reason.

He was a man of the mean, meaning he sought balance and logic. This intellectual approach allowed him to survive many dangers. His ability to use his mind rather than just brute strength set him apart. This distinction makes him one of the most unique heroes in all of classical mythology.
