He was a novelist, art critic, journalist, and playwright. His work reached a massive audience across Europe. He achieved celebrity status during his lifetime. His books have been translated into 30 different languages. Mirbeau was known for being a transgressive writer. This means his novels often challenged social rules. He explored difficult themes like violence and psychological detachment. He also addressed issues of abuse in his stories.

Mirbeau's writing process involved many different roles. He began his career as a ghostwriter. A ghostwriter is someone who writes books for other people. He wrote ten novels in this way. He even wrote three books for the Swiss writer Dora Melegari. Eventually, he began publishing under his own name. He used writing to express his specific ethical principles. He also used it to share his aesthetic values. He believed an intellectual's duty was to remain lucid. This means staying clear-headed and aware of reality.

His literary works evolved through several distinct stages. He first published *Le Calvaire* in 1886. This novel helped him process a traumatic personal relationship. In 1888, he wrote *L'Abbé Jules*. This was the first pre-Freudian novel in French influenced by Dostoevsky. He later wrote *Sébastien Roch* in 1890. This book dealt with his traumatic experiences at a Jesuit school. Later, he entered a period of literary crisis. During this time, he wrote *Dans le ciel*. This novel featured a painter named Lucien. This character was modeled on the artist Vincent van Gogh.

As his career progressed, Mirbeau's style became more experimental. He published scandalous novels like *Le Jardin des supplices* in 1899. He also wrote *Le Journal d'une femme de chambre* in 1900. These works unsettled traditional novelistic conventions. He used collage techniques to build his stories. Collage is a method of combining different pieces of material. He also broke the rules of verisimilitude. This term refers to the appearance of being true or real. In his final years, he moved away from realism entirely. His books *La 628-E8* and *Dingo* used clinical fantasy. In *Dingo*, he even made his own dog a hero.

Mirbeau was a powerful voice in the art world. He was an early advocate for Vincent van Gogh.
