An octagon is a shape with eight straight sides. This type of shape is called a polygon.

When an octagon is "regular," it follows very strict rules. Every side must be the exact same length. Every corner, or vertex, must also be the same size. In a regular octagon, each internal angle measures 135 degrees.

These shapes are very balanced. They have eight lines of reflective symmetry. They also have rotational symmetry of order 8. This means you can turn the shape and it looks the same many times.

There are many ways to build an octagon.

You can even make one by folding a sheet of paper. If you have a compass and a straightedge, you can draw one using a circle. First, you draw a diameter through the center. Then, you draw another diameter that is perpendicular to the first one. This creates four points that form a square. By bisecting the right angles, you find the other four points.

You can even build them with Meccano bars. To make a regular one, you would need twelve bars of size 4, three bars of size 5, and two bars of size 6.

Octagons have interesting parts inside them called diagonals.

A diagonal is a straight line that connects two corners. A regular octagon has three different types of diagonals. There are short diagonals, medium diagonals, and long diagonals. The medium diagonal is also called the span or the height. It is exactly twice the length of the inradius. The long diagonal is twice the length of the circumradius. You can also divide an octagon into smaller pieces. For example, a regular octagon can be split into six rhombs. A rhomb is a shape with four equal sides.

Geometry also looks at octagons in three dimensions.

, symmetry order 16.] A regular skew octagon does not lie on a flat plane. Instead, its vertices move between two different parallel planes. This creates a zig-zag shape. This shape can be seen in the edges of a square antiprism. There are also much larger shapes related to the octagon. For instance, a truncated octagon is a different shape called a hexadecagon. A hexadecagon has sixteen sides.

Architects love using the octagon in real buildings.

Many famous structures use an octagonal floor plan. The Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem is a famous example. The Tower of the Winds in Athens also uses this shape. You can find octagonal designs in many churches around the world. The Basilica of San Vitale in Italy is one such place. Even modern offices use octagonal layouts to separate different work areas. This shape helps create very interesting and functional spaces.
