Nur Ahmed Aman was a famous religious leader.

Becoming a Sultan was not easy for him. It started after his uncle, Sultan Hersi Aman, died. There was a long fight for the title. Different groups within the tribe had different ideas. Some wanted a different leader named Awad Deriyeh. This caused a civil war for ten years. Eventually, the groups decided to use a toss. They tossed to see who would be Sultan. Nur won the toss and became the leader.
Later, Nur helped start a movement called the Dervishes.
Nur was a key part of the Dervish uprising. It lasted from 1899 to 1920. He helped gather many men and weapons. In August 1899, he declared the rebellion. He hosted the tribesmen in his area of Burao. He fought in the war from 1899 to 1904. Nur provided political power and legitimacy. He worked with the religious leader Mohammed Abdullah Hassan. Together, they led the Dervish movement.
Peace finally came through a treaty. In 1905, Nur helped sign a peace deal. This was the Ilig Treaty. It is also called the Pestalozza agreement.

Sultan Nur Ahmed Aman was a significant religious and political leader in the Somali region.

Before becoming a Sultan, Nur was a dedicated religious scholar. He was a pupil in the Ahmadiyya tariqa, which is a Sufi religious order. He studied in the locations of Hahi and Berato. During his time in Berato, the head mullah was Mohamed Arab. In Hahi, the head mullah was Haji Musa. The Ahmadiyya tariqa was founded by Ahmad ibn Idris al-Fasi. There is some debate regarding Nur's literacy in Arabic. His wife, who was born in Aden, said he could only converse in Arabic. However, other records suggest he could both read and write the language.
Nur's path to the sultanate was marked by intense internal conflict. His uncle, Sultan Hersi Aman, died in an inter-clan war in 1879. This war involved the sage Haji Guled and caused much local poetry. After this, a decade-long civil war broke out over who would lead. A rival, Awad Deriyeh, claimed the title in 1881. The Habr Yunis tribe was divided into different sections like the Ba Makahil and Baha Deriyeh. To resolve the dispute, the clans decided to use a toss.
In the late 1890s, a specific event in Berbera triggered a massive uprising. A French Roman Catholic Mission was operating in the port city. Sultan Nur became concerned when he met a Somali boy at the mission school. The boy claimed his name was "John" and said he had no clan. To Nur, this represented the erasure of Somali identity and lineage. He believed the mission was dismantling traditional social structures.
By March 1899, Nur had moved to Kob Fardod to organize resistance.
Despite the intensity of the conflict, diplomacy eventually played a role. In 1905, a peace treaty was established to end the fighting. This was known as the Ilig Treaty or the Pestalozza agreement.
Sultan Nur's legacy is still visible in the Somali landscape today. He is entombed in a white-domed shrine located in Taleh.
