Novum Organum

philosophy religion Maturity 13-18 Next article →

Francis Bacon wrote a famous book in 1620. Its name is *Novum Organum*. This is a Latin name. It means "New Organon."

Bacon wanted a new way to find truth. He did not like the old ways. He thought people made mistakes. He said our minds have natural biases. A bias is a way of thinking that is not fair. He called these mistakes "Idols."

He spoke of four kinds of Idols. The first are Idols of the Tribe. These come from being human. The second are Idols of the Cave. These come from a person's own life. The third are Idols of the Market. These come from how we use words. The last are Idols of the Theatre. These come from old ideas and stories.

Bacon said we should use our senses. We should watch and touch things to learn. He used a way called induction. This means we look at many small facts first. Then we find a big rule. He used tables to help. One table listed where heat was found. Another list showed where heat was not. This helped him study nature. His work helped start the modern scientific method.
