Unlike modern crocodiles that mostly live in water, notosuchians were primarily terrestrial animals. This means they lived on land. They were a group of mesoeucrocodylians that mostly inhabited the supercontinent of Gondwana.

Fossils of these creatures have been discovered across South America, Africa, Asia, and Europe. Because they lived in many different environments, they evolved many unique physical traits. These traits allowed them to occupy many different roles in their ancient ecosystems.

The physical structure of notosuchians was often very different from modern crocodilians. Most members of this clade were generally small in size. They possessed slender bodies and erect limbs, which helped them move on land.

Other species like Pakasuchus had extremely complex, multicuspid teeth that looked very much like those of mammals. These teeth were able to occlude, or fit together, when the animal closed its mouth.

This variety in teeth allowed notosuchians to adopt many different feeding behaviors. Some members were herbivores, which means they ate only plants, such as Chimaerasuchus. Others were omnivores, eating both plants and meat, like Simosuchus.

Some were hypercarnivores, which are animals that eat almost exclusively meat. The baurusuchids were a large, highly carnivorous group within the clade.

Even their jaw mechanics varied. The genus Malawisuchus had jaw joints that allowed for a back-and-forth shearing motion. This was different from the simple up-and-down movement seen in most other animals.

The study of notosuchian history began in 1971 when the group was named by Zulma Gasparini.

Since that discovery, the scientific understanding of their relationships has changed many times. This process is called phylogenetic revision. Scientists use a data matrix to compare hundreds of morphological traits across many different taxa. For instance, a massive analysis used a matrix of 121 taxa and 443 different traits to study these relationships. These studies help scientists build a cladogram, which is a diagram showing how different species are related on an evolutionary tree.

Because of these constant revisions, the exact classification of notosuchians is still a subject of research. Some scientists once thought the group Sebecosuchia was part of Notosuchia. However, more recent studies, such as those by Larsson and Sues in 2007, suggested different groupings. They proposed a new clade called Sebecia to include certain species. Today, researchers continue to refine these groups by looking at how different families, like Baurusuchia or Peirosauria, connect to one another. This ongoing work helps us understand the complex family tree of all crocodyliforms.

Notosuchians also displayed amazing physical adaptations for survival. Some species had flexible bands of shield-like body armor.

This armor was similar to the protective plates found on modern armadillos. This specific trait is seen in the genus Armadillosuchus. Other notosuchians may have had fleshy cheeks or snouts that looked like a pig's snout, as seen in Notosuchus.
