The Northeast Region of Brazil, known locally as Nordeste, is a vital political and geographic area. It is one of five official regions in Brazil. This region consists of nine states: Maranhão, Piauí, Ceará, Rio Grande do Norte, Paraíba, Pernambuco, Alagoas, Sergipe, and Bahia. It also includes the Fernando de Noronha archipelago.

The region covers 18% of the total Brazilian territory. It is home to 57 million people, which is 28% of the national population. This area plays a major role in the country's history and economy. In 2020, it contributed 14.2% to Brazil's Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

The geography of the Northeast is shaped by its position in the tropical zone. The land stretches from the Atlantic Ocean to the Amazon Basin. It also reaches south through the Espinhaço highlands.

A major feature is the São Francisco River and its drainage basin. This river system helped people explore and settle the region. The landscape includes different ecoregions like the Caatinga, the Atlantic Forest, and parts of the Cerrado. The climate is generally hot and semi-arid, but it changes depending on where you are.

The region is divided into four distinct geoclimatic subregions. The first is the Zona da Mata, or "Forest Zone," located on the humid eastern coast. This area contains parts of the Atlantic Forest, also called Mata Atlântica. It is where the largest capital cities are located.

The second area is the Agreste. This is a transitional zone located on a steep escarpment. The escarpment is a sharp slope that blocks moisture from the ocean. Because of this, rainfall decreases as you move inland. Today, the Agreste is a major farming region due to irrigation.

Beyond the Agreste lies the Sertão, which means "backlands" or "outback." The Sertão consists mostly of low uplands within the Brazilian Highlands. Most of this area sits between 200 and 500 meters above sea level.

The climate here is very dry because the Intertropical Convergence Zone stays north of the region. Rainfall is often erratic and confined to a short season. This can lead to catastrophic droughts. In fact, the 2012–2016 drought was the longest in the region's history. Some call this area the "polygon of drought" because of this vulnerability.

The fourth subregion is the Meio-Norte, or "Midnorth." This area acts as a transition between the rainy Amazon rainforest and the dry Sertão. It covers the state of Maranhão and half of Piauí. The geology of the whole region is mainly an eroded continental craton. This means the land is filled with many low hills and small mountain ranges. The highest peaks are found in Bahia.

History in the Northeast began with indigenous peoples like the Tupi-Guarani. They lived there long before Europeans arrived. In 1500, Portuguese explorers led by Pedro Álvares Cabral arrived at Porto Seguro.

The coast became a center for extracting brazilwood. This wood was highly valued in Europe for red dye and violin bows. Later, the economy shifted to sugar cane cultivation on large estates. This era also saw the arrival of enslaved Africans starting in 1530. This history created a rich, diverse culture including unique music, food, and literature.

Conflict and competition also shaped the region's past. The Dutch attacked the coast and captured Pernambuco in 1630. They made Recife their capital for several years.

During this time, many Tupi people supported the Dutch against the Portuguese. Eventually, the Portuguese regained control in 1654. Throughout the colonial era, enslaved people resisted through the creation of quilombos. These were settlements for runaway or free-born African slaves. One famous example was the Quilombo dos Palmares. Today, the Northeast remains a place of great cultural distinction and historical depth.
