Norman McLaren was a famous maker of moving pictures. He was a pioneer in many different ways of making animation. He loved to experiment with how pictures and sounds work together. People call his style visual music because the art matches the beat. He used many different methods like hand-drawn animation and abstract film. He even used a trick called pixilation to make people move in special ways. His work helped change how we see cartoons and films today.

McLaren had many ways to create his art. Sometimes he did not even use a camera at all. Instead, he would scratch or paint directly on the film stock. This made the film itself look like a moving painting. He also worked on drawn-on-film animation to create new effects. He was very good at combining animation with music in a perfect way. This helped his films feel very alive and exciting to watch.

His journey began in Stirling, Scotland, in 1914. He was born to parents who lived in that part of Scotland. Later, he went to the Glasgow School of Art to study set design. While he was a student, he began making his own films. He even made a film called Seven Till Five in 1933. He also made a film called Camera Makes Whoopee in 1935. These early works helped him learn how to use trick shots.

McLaren moved to Canada in 1941 to work for the National Film Board. He helped open an animation studio called Studio A. He was the head of this studio starting in January 1943. He made many films there, including the famous Neighbours in 1952. That film won him an Oscar award for his work. He also won many other prizes at festivals in Venice and Cannes. He made about 70 films during his time with the National Film Board.

Many people still celebrate his amazing life and art. His work was added to UNESCO's Memory of the World Programme in 2009. This means his films are seen as very important history. Even famous directors like George Lucas say McLaren influenced them. In 2014, people held a big 100th birthday celebration for him. They showed his films in Scotland and in Montreal, Canada. Today, his ideas still help people learn how to make animation.
