He was well known for his unique comedic style. He often used a deadpan delivery, which means he told jokes with a very calm face. He also used eccentric understatement and old-fashioned ways of speaking. People loved his funny and sometimes chaotic way of performing. Many famous hosts, like David Letterman, thought he was the best stand-up comedian. He made people laugh by being unexpected and very dry.

His career moved through many different types of entertainment. He started by writing for comedy shows like Roseanne and The Dennis Miller Show. In 1993, he joined the cast of Saturday Night Live (SNL) for five seasons. He was the main host for the news segment called Weekend Update for three and a half seasons. He could do many funny impressions of famous people like Clint Eastwood. He also did voice acting for cartoons like Family Guy and The Fairly OddParents. Later, he hosted his own shows on Netflix and as a video podcast.

Norm's journey to fame began with hard work and study. He was born on October 17, 1959, in Quebec City, Quebec. His parents were both teachers from Ontario. Before he was a star, he worked manual labor jobs. One job was working as a chokerman for a logging company. He studied mathematics and philosophy at Carleton University. He also studied journalism and broadcasting at Algonquin College. His first comedy shows were at small clubs in Ottawa in 1985.

There were many big moments in his professional life. In 1986, he performed at the Just For Laughs Comedy Festival in Montreal. By 1989, he made his first U.S. television appearance on The Pat Sajak Show. He starred in the 1998 film Dirty Work after leaving SNL. In 2016, he wrote a novel called Based on a True Story. This book was a fictional version of his own life. He also hosted Norm Macdonald Live between 2013 and 2018.

Sometimes, his career had difficult and serious moments. He was removed from his role at Weekend Update in 1998. Some people thought this was because of his jokes about a famous trial. He also faced trouble regarding jokes about Michael Jackson. These events caused disagreements with leaders at the NBC network. In his later years, Norm faced a health struggle. He died from leukemia in September 2021. He had not told the public about his sickness before he passed away.
